It Is Written (where?)

Click Comic To Enlarge

John is somewhat concerned that Pastor Moses is leading the whole community to build something that God never asked his people to build in the first place; at least it doesn’t seem to be written anywhere in the Bible. In fact, Pastor Moses seems to be coping the pattern of the local Synagogues to justify building a local church institution; with it’s own building, staff, programs and religious services. But, as John tried to highlight to his pastor,  there doesn’t seem to be any place in the Bible where it was written to those under the Old Covenant to build local religious institutions either?

Perhaps God never asked, and it was never written in the Bible for anyone to do so, because God never intended for local religious institutions to be built in his name in the first place?

John isn’t sure, but he thinks it is worth an open and honest conversation with his pastor, and his other brothers and sisters in Christ, at the very least.

The Church Leadership Lifecycle

Pastor Moses never has a problem with the church leaders who burn out after he has driven them as hard as he could for as long as he could, because they all just seem to disappear; at least disappear from his mind and thoughts.

Eric can’t help but wonder what happened to all those leaders who burnt out after serving Pastor Moses’ vision? They couldn’t all have been abducted by aliens, right?

Miracles And Wonders

Pastor Moses seems to have a habit of fudging his ‘wonders and miracles’ testimonies… funny thing is, after he’s fudged the whole story, he actually believes it as if it’s totally factual.

What Is Perfect?

It seems that whenever someone is hurt or mistreated within Pastor Moses’ religious organisation, he pulls out the never fail one liner “No church is perfect, because they are all full of imperfect people”, this one liner however, seems to be a little misleading. Is it really ‘the churchPastor Moses is calling imperfect? Pastor Moses seems to be a little confused about this, but in any case, it seems that he is convinced about what is perfect…himself!

John finds it kind of hard to talk with someone, like his pastor, who is convinced they can’t possibly be the one in the wrong.

What Do You Love?

There seems to be a slippery slope away from a ‘Jesus love‘  into a ‘Pastor Moses love‘ going on. Not that there’s anything wrong with having a love for your pastor, but when the church starts finding their identity in the pastor they follow instead of the Christ they are in, well then,  perhaps it’s something worth rethinking?

The Mediator

John understands that under the Old Covenant there was need for a mediator, a man to meet with God and then instruct the rest of God’s people in God’s ways. But didn’t Jesus come to bring that whole way of relating with God to an end?

John was sure that the Bible testifies that now in the New Covenant there is no longer a mediator between the people and Christ, but now Christ himself has become the mediator… Eric however, seems to not only be content, but dependant on his Pastor continuing in that Old Covenant office of mediator…. My goodness, what would Eric do without his pastor??

Perhaps he would get to know Jesus up close and personal?

For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus 1 Timothy 2:5

Being A Number 2

Young Bobby hasn’t yet learnt the Christianese language of Church leadership hierarchy, and he only knows what a ‘number 2′ means in the world. But not to worry, Eric is sure that soon enough, young Bobby will learn to speak Christianese fluently.

Who Is Leading The Church?

Eric finds John very naive sometimes; doesn’t he understand that Jesus isn’t a leader in the church? That role belongs first to the senior pastors, and then to their faithful ‘number two’s; those committed to serving the ‘number one’ as he leads… John can’t help but feel Jesus is meant to be the ‘number one’, and the church should actually expect him to be the leader, right?

Highest Authority

Eric seems to be fully convinced that church is a one hour program on Sunday; John is convinced that church is something so much greater than a program, it is the body of Christ made up of all who have believed in Jesus. John believes the church is meant to function through loving and genuine relationships; Eric on the other hand believes the church is meant to function according to the service run sheet.

In the end, it comes down to listening to the highest authority to gain insight and truth; unfortunately, Eric’s highest authority seems to be Pastor Moses

From Decision Maker To Disciple

Pastor Moses loves to boast from the stage about how many people made a ‘decision’ for Jesus, quoting a big number that always get people clapping and amening. But how many of those people actually end up getting baptised? Well, thanks to the ingenious ideas of Liz the service coordinator, it seems like all of them do…at least on paper.

Something fudgy is going on here… number fudging fudgy that is
