Introducing (drum roll please) ‘Searching For Grace’ – The Comic

A short history of the cast and crew:

After moving into a new city, John was hoping to find a nice, relational church community to be apart of. Instead, he somehow found himself planted in a structured, program focused, and leadership obsessed, church organisation led by Pastor Moses.

Pastor Moses has been trying to build his church organisation for the past ten years. Currently, only a few hundred people attend his church services, but he is already living with the ‘big vision’ mindset that one day he will be, yes, that’s right – a mega-church pastor.

In order to reach his goals of building a mega-church, he constantly pushes the idea of submitting to ‘spiritual authority’

Pastor Moses leads a wacky bunch of overly obsessed church volunteers who spend so much of their time running church programs they never have time to actually form a relationship with John, or anyone else for that matter.

When John first joined the church, he already had a firm understanding of the finished work of Jesus, and was somewhat shocked to discover that Pastor Moses, who was meant to be leading the whole community, was not acquainted with the reality of a gospel of grace apart from law. Rather, he preaches a mixed gospel message of law and grace; mixing the old covenant ways with the new covenant reality.

John believes in grace, and he feels compelled to gracefully attempt to highlight some of the wrong thinking and beliefs his pastor has. His heart is not to embarrass or slander his pastor; on the contrary, he truly respects and loves him as a fellow brother in Jesus. What he desires to see is Pastor Moses understanding the reality of grace apart from law.

In order for Pastor Moses reach his ultimate goal, he chooses not to view the church as a natural, relational community, but rather he runs it like a CEO with a standard company structure, hierarchical leadership, and of course, paid staff. To say Pastor Moses is a little obsessed with leadership is actually a big understatement!

One of the other staff members is Peggy, the ‘worship’ pastor.

Eric is not on staff, but he does do more work for the church than anyone else, including Pastor Moses. Eric sees himself as Pastor Moses’ ‘armor-bearer’ and believes that he can work his way into his future calling.

Eric also is a little too ‘super-spiritual’ for John’s liking.

John is also quite concerned how many of the young people in the church are more caught up in the idea or ‘serving’ then they are in the opportunity to grow in their relationship and understanding of Jesus.

There is also Liz the service coordinator, and her faithful assistant Jessica helping to run the show every weekend.

We also can forget about Pastor Moses’ wife (who is always forgotten about, in fact no once even knows her name, they just refer to her as ‘Pastor Moses’ wife’

There is also Luke, who left the church last year, seeking to understand Jesus, his faith, the church (not as Pastor Moses’ programmed idea, but as the relational body of Christ). He tried to leave gracefully and maintain relationship with his pastor, but was a bit shocked at what happened next.

Now, in 2011, Pastor Moses has just revealed the new ‘church vision’

Where will things go from here? Only time will tell. I update the comic every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I hope you enjoy them.
