John is getting tired of hearing all these fine sounding prayers that are filled with Christianese. Eric on the other hand loves Christianese, it makes him sound so spiritual when he uses it.

I think people do come up with phrases with specific (although obscure to outsiders) meanings and they become popular in that interest group. Jargon emerges. The more popular the phrase is, the more quickly it is accepted into the contemporary 'general use' language and then it is no longer jargon. It is also then at the mercy of the interpretation drift of the general population. Take the word book for example: You could alternatively describe a book by it's characteristics – "i am reading a some bound pieces of paper inscribed with words in the English language". Gosh, that would extend the average sentence by a lot…!
Each time a new religious group knocks on my door to chat with me about their pamphlets, sometimes they have had a go at dropping their jargon (religionese) and for a while I am confused. "so do you guys to to a church or a kingdom hall?"….
Just when I thought I was getting over my 20+ years in 'ministry' and you go and stir all those emotions back up again!!! GEE THANKS! LOL (I LOVE this humor!)

Christianese terms to be thought through:
'pastor' – would not it not much better be translated as 'shepherd' so we can see it's a metaphor?
'apostle' – would it not much better be translated as 'sent one' or 'messenger', the orginal in the Greek?
'gospel' – would it not much better be translated as 'good news' what it meant in the original?
'church' – would it not much better be translated as 'fellowship' or 'coming together' like in the original…
there is so many more. all these terms promote religion, because people attach meanings to it which are not the original thoughts. and people get abused all over the world and people are robbed of the true message everywhere… :-S
