The problem is that so many people don't acknowledge they are sinners. In order to understand why Jesus had to go to the cross, people need to understand that they are sinners. The gospel of John is not a systematic explanation of the the gospel but an account of the life of Christ and what He did (I am not denying it's importance but just trying to show it's function). However, Romans, which is clearly a more systematic statement of the gospel actually does start out with sin and then proceeds to justification. Why did Stephen get stoned in the book of Acts? He convicted the Jews. Of what? Sin. The reason why they rejected him is because it is only by the sovereign grace of God that they could ever accept and so God didn't give them the grace to believe. Peter preached a similar sermon in Acts two and many believed even though it was offensive because salvation is of the Lord. We must remember to preach Christ's gospel, which includes sin and not try to make it more palatable to fallen man. We should trust that God can convert any sinner.
