Bertie Brits Interview

Bertie BritsThis week I interviewed Bertie Brits, a passionate preacher from South Africa with a big heart and a great gift to communicate the good news of God’s grace. The main topic of our conversation ended up being about tithing, and what the underlying effects of believing that this old covenant law is still apart of the new covenant are.

Bertie has a great website with hundreds of free video and audio messages available there. You can check it out at: www.dynamicministries.com

Because we talked a lot about tithing in this interview, I have also added my own personal views about tithing. After you’ve listened to my interview with Bertie you might also be interested in listening to my own views too in the audio link below.

OK, enjoy the interview!

God’s Focus?

Pastor Moses is so concerned with God’s focus, that he wants to make sure it is crystal clear to his church members by talking about it all the time; that would be an amazing thing, if he actually knew what God’s focus is.

He seems a little confused about the whole thing really.

Selective Disclosure

Pastor Moses likes to use examples from his own life to encourage his church members, especially when it comes to money, but he’s not so keen to share everything with them, just the stuff that makes him look awesome.

Heresy

Pastor Moses seems to get very protective when he hears other pastors preaching things that he insists are heresy, and finds no problem with publicly rebuking them for the way they are misleading God’s flock… Hmmm, John can’t help but wonder how Pastor Moses would react if someone publicly rebuked him on similar grounds for preaching heresy.

John can’t figure out what the difference is between preaching that Christians are still obligated to be circumcised and preaching that Christians are still obligated to tithe. Why is preaching circumcision heresy in Pastor Moses mind, but preaching tithing is totally acceptable? Aren’t they both part of the old covenant ceremonial law?

(Note from Mick: I was recently interviewed for the ‘growing in grace’ podcast and I gave my personal views on tithing. You can listen to it here: Mick Mooney’s Interview With Growing In Grace )

What’s On Pastor Moses’ Mind?

Pastor Moses’ theology doesn’t seem to add up. On one hand he is happy to say that Christians are not obligated to the law, but on the other hand he says tithing is still an obligation that Christians need to keep. His rationale for believing this actually makes no sense, but, as it seems, he doesn’t have any intention of changing his mind.

John wonders why Pastor Moses doesn’t realise just how dangerous this is to the church, as the Apostle Paul said, if you want to keep one part of the law then you are obligated to keep all of them. John thinks it’s just a simple gospel truth, and that Pastor Moses should know by now that you can’t leave out the laws that are weird or awkward to follow, but still keep preaching the ones that get people to open up their wallets.

Circumcision And Tithing

John is having a tough time trying to figure out why Pastor Moses is so convinced tithing is part of the new covenant, but circumcision is not. Aren’t they both religious obligations from the old covenant? Can we break the law up into pieces and take some of it into the new covenant and leave the rest in the old, or did Jesus fulfill every old covenant obligation on our behalf, so we could now live in a new covenant of grace?

Pastor Moses doesn’t see what Johns problem is. He thinks tithing is great.

Those Foolish Galatians

You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Have you suffered so much for nothing—if it really was for nothing? Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard? Galatians 3:1-5

John’s question to Pastor Moses is a simple one: Does God bless us and provide for us because we observe the law of tithing, or because we have believed what we heard about Christ and him crucified?

He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Romans 8:32

Twisting Scripture

Poor old Pastor Moses will use any scripture to try to prove to his church members that they are still obligated to tithe… hmmmm

For those who are interested, the Bible verse John is quoting in the first panel is 2 Corinthians 1:20 – what an amazing reality!! The good news that Jesus has done everything on our behalf, so that now God can freely bless us apart from our works, performance or religious activities – and we simply say ‘Amen’ and that is what gives God glory!

Gosh the gospel is goooood :-)
