Worship Mediator Complex

After yesterday’s heated talk with John (click here to see the comic) Pastor Moses has calmed down, and upon reflection has gone to Peggy, the ‘worship leader’, to ask her opinion. Peggy, unfortunately, has a severe case of WMC (Worship Mediator Complex) and so has no desire to even think about such things!

(Note from Mick: This is actually an older comic from 2009 that I have redone. I thought it fit with the last comic so I added it today.)

Pushing Theological Buttons

Pastor Moses is normally I very calm, controlled Christian. But when John expresses his theological ideas with Pastor Moses that conflict with his own way of theology, he finds himself being overcome with a powerful urge to use his super spiritual anointing to, well, explode John for daring to suggest such things. But is that really a loving, Christian way to respond? After all, John is just searching for truth, and wants to share that journey with Pastor Moses so that they can, as a community, grow together in their understanding of God and the New Covenant they are a part of. There’s nothing wrong with that, right?

Believing Dodgy Worship Theology

Bobby just wants to do whatever makes God happy. Unfortunately for him, he has a worship pastor who has made him believe that he needs to stress himself and press as hard as he can even to make initial contact with God. Peggy has even managed to convince young Bobby that being able to push so hard in the flesh that you actually make your head self-explode is the pinnacle of great worship in God’s eyes.

John believes that Christians are meant to be defined by their ability to rest in God’s presence, and can’t help but think that it makes more sense that worship would be a time of rest, not stress. Hmmm, John can hear the footsteps of the theology police (most likely Eric) already making plans to correct him.

Professional Worship Leading

Professional Worship Leading

Peggy , the ‘worship pastor’, believes that church needs special instructions from her to be able to worship God effectively. In fact, she believes that without her professional service, the church would really have no idea how to really get into deep worship. John isn’t so sure. In fact, he thinks that perhaps Peggy’s constant pushing is causing the church to strive into worship, instead of resting in the good news of God’s love, and from that place naturally worship.

Pastor Moses is just happy everyone has their eyes closed, it allows him to also pray intensely for the church in his usual way.

Pastor Worship

Now that he no longer has his Pastorman mask to make it obvious to everyone that he is superhuman, Pastor Moses thought it would be a good idea to remind the church that he still is an awe-inspiring, God-like person. Knowing it would come across as self-promoting if he simply said it himself, he got Eric, one of his faithful armor-bearers, to testify about his greatness instead – and the crowd loved it… John however, doesn’t seems to be so happy about how the whole church is putting Pastor Moses on such a high pedestal – isn’t that place meant for Jesus?

Worship Practice Night

Peggy feels it is her duty, as the ‘worship pastor‘ to help the church understand how to worship, she has even set up a worship ‘practice’ night for those who really want to master the art.

Eric is training hard to achieve the title of : hardcore worshipper.

Church Titles

John is somewhat confused as to why he would need someone to ‘pastor’ him to worship; in fact he’s not even really sure what that even means… it turns out that neither does Peggy.

Well, she may not actually know what it means, but she seems to be very sure of what her official title is: Worship Pastor.

On Cue

Eric is learning how to perform all his spiritual obligations on cue… but John wonders if the Christian life is really all about being able to ‘perform‘ at the drop of a hat, or is it more do do with being led, and moved, by the Spirit?

Eric seems to be happy to discipline his flesh to just do it when he, or Pastor Moses, decide it’s time… If only it was so easy to ‘perform‘ when he goes to the bathroom (constipation is a terrible thing; poor Eric)- oh well, keep practicing Eric.
