Worship ‘Practice’ Night

Peggy the worship pastor recently introduced herself to John (see comic here) where she had to admit she didn’t really know what being a worship pastor really meant. But, one thing she does to fulfil her ‘church title’ as the worship pastor is to organise a weekly worship practice night. Eric tried to get John to join him, but John found the whole idea of ‘practicing’ worship very strange and politely declined the invitation. Meanwhile, Eric is practicing away, he’s pretty sure he’ll be a professional worshipper soon. He believes in the motto: practice makes perfect! Someone should warn Eric not too practice too much or his head might really explode!

ROFLOL!! maybe this is why some of us music ministers get accused of “performing but not worshiping!” We work on giving an excellent music offering to honor the excellent God and to not be a mediocre distraction to worshipers, but of course we never tried to make our heads explode…*memo to me: if I ever go back on-stage to lead in worshipful singing, I must “imagine trying to make my head explode”* I’ll try to report if this new element makes a difference. *groan*

I have to say that practicing “worship” is of course a funny term. Worship is a state of the heart and we should be worshiping God 24/7 by the way we live our lives. I do have to say though that as a worship leader, practicing our music is very important in order to be able to play the songs as a team and help create an environment to enter into God’s presence without distractions of musicians constantly messing up and/or not knowing what they’re playing. I have learned that practicing the songs makes a huge difference in us as worshipers being able to let the presence of God lead our worship sets because we are comfortable in the songs we are playing, and allow God to lead us into certain areas of singing/playing “in the Spirit”. Hope this makes sense!

Sure Melissa. I guess it would be better to call it ‘music practice’. Personally, I this comic is what comes to mind when we say ‘worship practice’ :-) But yeah, of course I understand what you are saying. Have a great week!

Thanks Mick, you too! I wanted to say that I really enjoy your comics and also different writings of yours that I’ve seen. I love the focus on how it’s all about God’s grace and not about any of our works. Very encouraging!

Glad to hear that Melissa :-) Thanks for sharing.

When did playing music and singing equal worship? Back when I went to the Sunday show the singing was my favorite. But that is because I am deeply moved by music, and if it is music I like, any music can produce the same feelings in me. You can’t conjure up God and make Him show up with music. More often than not or more often than anyone would want to admit, the feelings they have are produced by the music alone.

This was a hard realization to me, as I said, the music was my favorite part as I “worshipped.” I was shocked when a very strong Christian woman in our church said that she didn’t like the music part. What? Rock my world! Why didn’t she like it, she can’t carry a tune. Same with hubby, can’t carry a tune and never liked the music.

I know that sincere hearts mean well, but… yeah, it’s music practice. And the correct title in some churches still goes as “choir director” instead of worship leader or worship pastor.

One thing you do have wrong about the cartoon is that since it is a woman, it would be worship leader. If a man, then a worship pastor.

SO happy to finally spend my Sundays home, (after years and years of burn-out) truly enjoying a day of rest!

I agree I think its very valid for church musicians & singers to practice the songs, but of course no one should be “practicing” the worship part in that sense- one of the problems in the Body is that people confuse worship with music. Worship doesn’t necessarily include music but it can, and music isn’t necessarily worship, but it can be.
